October in the Classroom

October is here, bringing lots of opportunities to connect everyday classroom learning with seasonal events, Canadian culture and practical language skills.

If you're looking for ideas to keep your students busy this month, here are a few themes to consider:

Fall & Changing Seasons
Talk about changing weather, appropriate clothing, fall activities and preparing for colder temperatures. This is also a great theme for practicing comparatives, weather vocabulary and giving advice.

Canadian Thanksgiving – October 12
For newcomers experiencing their first Thanksgiving in Canada, explore Canadian Thanksgiving traditions, gratitude, food and celebrations. Students can compare Thanksgiving with celebrations and traditions from their home countries.

Fire Prevention & Home Safety
Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10 this year. The 2026 theme focuses on safely charging the lithium-ion batteries found in everyday devices such as phones, laptops and e-bikes. This can easily become a practical settlement-language lesson about smoke alarms, emergency plans, calling 911 and staying safe at home.

Food & Healthy Living
World Food Day falls on October 16. Food, grocery shopping, nutrition, recipes and healthy choices can work at virtually every CLB level.

Halloween – October 31
Halloween provides lots of opportunities for vocabulary, reading, conversation and cultural comparison. For lower-level learners, try picture vocabulary and simple conversations. Higher-level learners can discuss traditions, community events and how Halloween is celebrated differently around the world.

Don't Forget the PBLA Opportunities

Many of these themes can easily become skill-using activities or assessment tasks.

A lesson about fire safety could become a Listening task. Students could practice Speaking by explaining what to do during an emergency. A Thanksgiving lesson could include Reading followed by a short Writing task. A workplace unit could lead naturally to a Speaking assessment such as calling a supervisor.

The goal is to make PBLA part of what we're already teaching, rather than something extra that has to be added later.

More Resources Coming Soon!

Over the next few weeks, watch for some updates to our PBLA resources, templates and supports. I will also be sharing more information about Tutela and the professional resources available to instructors there.

The goal is to keep things practical, organized and easy to incorporate into your regular teaching.

Have a great October!
